Eku Energy acquires 1,600 MWh
battery storage project from NION
The project is one of the largest battery storage projects in Germany
– a significant milestone following the granting of the preliminary building permit.
London/Hamburg. NION has sold a battery storage project with a nominal power of 400 MW and a planned storage capacity of 1,600 MWh to the international energy infrastructure investor Eku Energy. The project located in Lamspringe, Lower Saxony, is at an advanced stage of development and has recently received the preliminary building permit.
With a planned storage capacity of up to 1,600 MWh, the project is one of the largest battery storage projects in Germany. Large-scale storage facilities of this size will play a key role in the future in stabilising the electricity grid and integrating renewable energy. Among other things, they store excessive electricity generated from wind and solar energy and make it available again as and when required. In doing so, they make an important contribution to security of supply and the energy transition.
“The sale of this project to Eku Energy confirms the high quality of our project development and underlines our position as one of the leading developers of battery storage projects in Germany,” says Nikolas Lubbe, Managing Director of NION. “We are delighted that the project is now moving into the next phase of development in collaboration with an experienced partner.”
NION remains responsible for the further development of the project. Eku Energy will take charge of strategic management in the areas of development, design and technology. Fluence Energy is expected to be the supplier of the battery storage system.
For Eku Energy, the transaction represents another important step in the expansion of its European energy storage portfolio. The company develops and operates battery storage projects worldwide.
